It's not unthinkable. We as a society avoid talk of actually recognizing any organization as a bona-fide threat to our society because that would upset the image we have of ourselves. We're Americans after all, and we're above that kind of third world armed rebellion, right? Not really. In recent years - since Barack Obama was elected, in fact - the N.R.A. and other right wing organizations have ratcheted up their threatening rhetoric. Angry tirades by Wayne La Pierre claiming that president Obama wants to take away our right to own a firearm is to be expected in the wake of whatever latest massacre takes place.
Spurred on by Wayne La Pierre, anxious gun buyers are fast depleting inventory of all manner of firearms, but especially the para-military type rifles and high capacity magazines that feed the rifles and egos of those who see president obama as a threat to their security. In times past, the NRA operated as the quasi-educational lobbying arm of the firearms manufacturing industry, and kept a somewhat low profile. We might have heard the NRA and it's one-time spokeman, Charlton Heston bellow something about his cold dead hands, but we didn't see commercials smearing our president and his family. Then again, the president and the first family weren't black either.
This brings me to the conclusion that as it stands now, the NRA has morphed into a bona-fide threat to the security and well being of our society. Maybe this was the logical end to such a unique organization, but we must deal with the reality at hand. The NRA is fostering ill-will and angry rhetoric, backed by the exhortation to reject any and all attempts to regulate their industry, and by extension, rebel against what their supporters see as a too big government, bent on tyranny.
The next logical step in the evolution of the NRA dynamic is increased incidents of right wing "Lone wolf" shootings together with right wing groups forming alliances to reject not only all firearm regulation, but all things government, leading to another Ruby Ridge and/or Waco type incident, only bigger, and several at once.
We can't wait. You, your children and family members could be the next victim of the NRA's promotion of guns and gun violence. It's time the NRA and its loud-mouthed leader be classified formally as a domestic terrorist organization. They've earned the title.
