In recent months, I've noticed relatively small articles in my local paper such as the headline quoted above from the A.P. The article starts with: "Unemployment rates fell in August in nearly 90 percent of large U.S. Metro areas, mainly because more people gave up looking for work." The article goes on to say that the overall unemployment rate in August fell from 8.3 to 8.1 "Also because more people stopped searching for jobs and weren't counted"....Huh?? How would anyone know, if those people "weren't counted"??
Are we to believe there are millions of unemployed folks who are apparently so discouraged that they actually give up looking for a job....and not counted? Really? The reason these articles strike me as a baseless statements is that if there really are millions who simply "Gave up looking for work", most would soon be destitute and homeless. I cannot help but suspect these articles are little more than pure fear mongering, but...why? Why would the A.P. be pushing this kind of irresponsible journalsim? These articles never list a source, never quote some government agency with hard data gathered to support the claim.
Is there a toll free number I haven't heard of where the greatly discouraged call to say they've thrown in the towell? I say the articles are plain B.S., with no data shown to verify the story. But maybe I'm missing something. Maybe one of you journalistic types can share some kind of data you've run across showing how people who have given up looking for a job are counted, and how these prostrate hordes affect the employment numbers if their numbers are not tallied. Are they part of Romney's 47% moochers? WAIT....... He walked that back just yesterday....nevermind.
With another administration, a falling unemployment rate "in nearly 90 percent of large U.S. Metro areas" would be front page news, with the dreaded "Librul" MSM trumpeting the progress made in reversing a 6 year economic downslide. Instead, we see regular, smaller pieces, advertising that the rate is falling only because millions have "given up looking for work". Who is running the A.P? Carl Rove?
I say the A.P. needs to back it up with verifiable data, or quit spreading the B.S. Tell me what you think.
